  Our Purpose

 The South Georgia Association for Play Therapy, Inc. (SGAPT) is a branch of the Association for Play Therapy, Inc. (APT). APT was founded in 1982, with the mission “to advance the psychosocial development and mental health of all people through play and play therapy by promoting:

  • The understanding and valuing of play and play therapy;
  • The effective practice of play therapy through training, research and support;
  • The recognition, incorporation and preservation of diversity in play and play therapy; and
  • The development and maintenance of a strong professional organization to accomplish these objectives.

The purpose of SGAPT is to provide a forum for the discussion of play therapy principles, practices and advocacy. Our territory includes the southern area of Georgia, south of a line from Columbus, to Macon, to Augusta. Per APT guidelines, an APT member may choose to join any branch as their primary branch. You do not need to live or work within the branch’s geographical area to join that branch.

SGAPT Seeks to...

The South Georgia Association for Play Therapy, Inc. seeks to:

  1. Advance the discipline of play therapy;

  2. Provide a networking resource for all members;

  3. Promote sound play therapy practices in the best interest of individuals and society;

  4. Advance the highest standards of professional conduct through education, professional meetings, & conferences;

  5. Conduct and foster programs of education in the field of play therapy;

  6. Inform and educate the general public and mental health community about play therapy;

  7. Establish contacts with various organizations for support and educational pursuit; and

  8. Advocate for the rights of children, their families and significant others.
